Both types of systems may be used. The breath by breath system incorporates rapid response O2 and CO2 analyzers so that the waveform of each breath can be monitored and metabolic data collected over the period of each breath. While this type of time resolution is not essential for many CPX measurements, the breath by breath system does allow a closer examination of metabolic kinetics. For example, the onset of the anaerobic threshold may be more easily identified. Mixed expired air systems provide more time-integrated measurements of metabolic rate, and may smooth aberrant spikes in data that may occur with breath by breath systems. However, Qubit’s ComPAS software provides the best of both worlds. Data may be collected and analyzed on a breath by breath basis, or data may be averaged over any number of breaths or over selected time periods. In addition, data points may be observed individually, and any aberrant outlier data (due, for example, to the subject coughing etc.) can be deleted from the analysis.
The choice is yours. Qubit’s various systems allow for both. A face mask is often more comfortable since occlusion of the nose is not required, and breathing is more natural. However, the face mask has to fit snugly without leaks. Qubit’s masks come in various sizes (for children to large adults), are very inexpensive (allowing one mask per user), and the inflatable bladder provides a comfortable fit on most faces. This contrasts with many other masks that are much more expensive (requiring sterilization between use among different subjects), are heavier and are not adjustable. The pneuomtach tube that fits the Qubit face mask may also be attached to a mouth-piece if this is preferred.
Both systems are used in different systems. Turbines have a smaller profile but can suffer from inertia. Pneumotach tubes can be affected by condensation of breath. Qubit’s pneumotach tubes meet ATS standards for accuracy and their calibration is easily verified by a rapid routine in ComPAS software. Recalibration, if necessary, takes just a few minutes. The tubes are extremely inexpensive, so that one tube may be used per subject. This is in contrast with turbine systems that must be sterilized between uses among different subjects. In high throughput CPX measurements, the disposable pneumotach system has clear advantages. Qubit’s face masks and pneumotachs are also sterilizable when required.

Qubit’s CPX instruments are not yet approved by the FDA or Health Canada for clinical and diagnostic purposes. This is not a reflection on their design, reliability of accuracy, all of which are superb and which exceed FDA and Health Canada standards. FDA and Heath Canada procedures for product accreditation are extremely expensive, time consuming and require on-going administrative infrastructure. Rather than delay product launch, and deny clients the great advantages of using our systems, we have released our CPX products initially into the research and teaching markets (which do not require FDA or Health Canada accreditation). Our prices are extremely competitive, partly because we do not need to recoup the very significant expenses associated with maintaining medical accreditation.
The BBB1LP and Q-CPX Systems have similar analysers. What is the difference between the two systems?
The BBB1LP was designed primarily as a teaching system, although it can be used very effectively for research. It can be used with Loggerpro software (that comes with the standard package) or with the AD Instruments Powerlab interface and LabChart software. The latter may be purchased as an option or the system can be used with a Powerlab system you possess already. The standard BBB1LP system includes O2 and CO2 analyzers, as a well as a heart rate monitor. It has limited pulmonary function capabilities. It does not control an ergometer, althoug ergometer data may be entered into software. The standard Q-CPX system has far more extensive capabilities, and is based around ComPAS software that has been used for decades in hospital-based pulmonary function tests. As well as providing extremely accurate CPX measurements, the system can be used to measure SpO2, blood pressure, 12 lead EKG and includes a complete suite of pulmonary function tests that may be made before, during and after CPX measurements. The price differential between the BBB1LP and the Q-CPX does not reflect a difference in accuracy, but in capability, software sophistication and convenience.

I am interested primarily in metabolic fitness data. Why should I pay extra for PFT measurements in the Q-CPX System?
You don’t. The PFT functions of the Q-CPX system do not add to its extremely competitive price. You may use as much or as little of the PFT functions as you consider appropriate. They are there because metabolic and pulmonary fitness are often tightly associated and may be co-dependent, so it is extremely valuable to assess the pulmonary aspect of metabolic fitness. Because PFT parameters can alter significantly during exertion, ComPAS software allows PFT measurements to be made at any point during exercise without interruption of CPX measurements. PFT data can be viewed independently, or together with CPX data in the data base and reports.
The amount of data generated in CPX and PFT tests can be overwhelming. How does your system cope with this?
We give you complete flexibility in data handling. You can view as much or as little of the raw data as you wish. You may accept all of our calculation algorithms and view only a summary of calculated data, or you may apply your own algorithms to recalculate the raw data. The raw data in its entirety, and despite “deletion” of any outlier points you may exclude from calculations, is always saved intact. Data may be presented in a variety of templates including graphs, tables and text, either using defaults or by creating formats that you prefer. Our software is about choice and flexibility to save you time and to eliminate the drudgery of data handling.
The reports generated by CPX software packages do not meet my requirements and do not allow editing. Is your software any different ?
Totally different. You may choose to generate reports in one of several of our default reporting formats, or you can create a report format specifically for your testing lab. You may even include your lab logo. Setting up a report format in ComPAS software is very easy, and you may choose however many pages you require, with as many graphs, tables and text boxes as needed. The reports are then generated automatically within the chosen format on the conclusion of the tests.
